ROAD

Finland is an example of how it's sometimes best to take the longer route. I found myself needing to get from somewhere else in Europe to Russia. There were flights that were quicker and easier, but I decided the mystique of a train ride through Northwestern Russia would create a different adventure. That option started in Helsinki, so I added three days there to get a sense of the city before heading to St. Petersburg. It turned out to be an incredible expereince and one of the highlights on a five country exploration. Finland is a bit out of the way, but ideal for a trip visiting the Skandinavian countries or a purposeful stop on a cruise.
