Sometimes a trip is poor timing but the situation is jsut right. When that happens, you do whatever you can to make the trip happen. This was my story with Russia. It wasn't an ideal time to go, but two friends where going for an extended time and one of them was Russian with family there. This meant a translator and a place to stay with locals to get an experience of real life. My experience was all over the spectrum with making lifelong memories at historical sites, attending the ballet and uncertain run-ins with authorities. I am so glad I went, but it is also one of the few places that I am okay seeing it once.
